Keep Under 3 Inquiries Per Bureau

Why It Matters:

It's best to have fewer than three inquiries (credit checks) in the last six months with the credit reporting agency that the bank you're applying to will review.

The Problem with Too Many:

Too many inquiries can make you appear desperate for credit, which may raise red flags for lenders.

Types of Inquiries:

  • Hard Inquiries - Affect your score (credit applications)
  • Soft Inquiries - Don't affect score (checking your own credit)

Smart Strategy:

  • Space out credit applications
  • Shop for mortgages/auto loans within 14-45 days (counts as one inquiry)
  • Check which bureau a lender uses before applying
